A Milling Tradition for Nearly 100 Years

1909

Founder, Francis Atherton Bean, buys Robin Hood’s first flour mill in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, employing 62 people.

1911

The mill is remodeled, increasing output to over 1600 barrels of flour a day.

1925

Robin Hood begins exporting flour and oats to struggling nations.

1938 - 39

By the late ’30s, Robin Hood products reach far northern outposts; some district managers even travel by dogsled to reach remote regions such as Churchill and Frobisher Bay.

1940s

Robin Hood opens a new mill in Humberstone (present day Port Colborne). Robin Hood mills “G.R. Flour,” sending thousands of tonnes overseas as foreign aid.

1950

Winnipeg experiences the worst flood in North American history. Robin Hood responds, donating clothes, supplies and a $10,000 cheque to the flood relief fund.

1969

By the end of the ’60s, Robin Hood serves consumer, bakery and foodservice markets, producing hundreds of products – from its traditional flour to oat cereals, baking mixes and other condiments.

1989 - 90

An unmatched, state-of-the-art Robin Hood baking mix facility opens in Burlington, Ontario.

2004

The Montreal plant expansion project is completed, increasing Robin Hood’s milling capacity by 33%.

2004

The J.M. Smucker Company acquires the Robin Hood brand through its purchase of International Multifoods Corporation.

2006

Horizon Milling G.P. is formed to purchase the grain-based Foodservice and Industrial businesses of Smucker Foods of Canada Co., a wholly owned subsidiary of The J.M. Smucker Company and licenses the rights to Smucker’s Robin Hood brand for use in Canadian foodservice and industrial channels.
